KANSAS:
Nation's oldest federal judge dies at 104

The Honorable Wesley Brown, a US Senior District Judge who sat in Wichita, here
pictured when he turned 100 in 2007. He died at the age of 104 in an assisted-living
center Monday, 01/23/12. Judge Brown was appointed to the federal bench by
President John F. Kennedy in 1962. Associates said that although his case load
was lighter in recent years, he kept working almost until the end.

'Velvet Revolution' icon Vaclav Havel dead at 75

Vaclav Havel, who led his nation out from under the Soviet yoke in the 1980's and
then served his newly reconstituted nation as president, died Sunday morning in
his home. He came to symbolize the power of a peaceful revolution and was
lionized by peace groups world wide. He was 75.

Cardinal John Foley, American spokesman for the Vatican, dies at 76

Cardinal John P. Foley, a former Philadelphia priest, rose to the highest levels of the
Roman Catholic Church, serving as chief of communications at the Vatican for more
than 20 years. He was appointed by Pope John Paul II and was most-well known for
his annual "play-by-play" of one of the world's most-watched telecasts, Midnight Mass
on Christmas Eve from the Vatican. Cardinal Foley, who had been suffering from
leukemia, retired from Vatican service in 2010, returning to Philadelphia. He was 76.

First African woman to win Nobel Peace Prize, dies

Wangari Maathai of Kenya became the first African woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
in 2004. She was the founder of what she called The Green Belt Movement, mobilizing poor women
to plant 30-million trees over a 30-year period. The environmental movement became a political
one when Maathai stood up to a repressive government, demonstrating that a policy of clear-
cutting forests was economically counter-productive. She died at the age of 71 of cancer.

Actor Cliff Robertson won an Oscar for his role as a disabled bakery worker in the
film "Charlie". He portrayed John F. Kennedy in the World War II film, "PT 109".

PHILADELPHIA: Joey Vento, owner of landmark cheesesteak stand dies

In 2006, Joey Vento and his Geno's Cheesesteak stand made national headlines after
he posted a sign demanding customers place their orders in English. Geno's, a South
Philly landmark is right across the street from Pat's King of Steaks and the 2 businesses
both claimed to have the best Philly Cheese Steak in the world. Vento died of a heart
attack Tuesday 08/23/11. He was 71.

U.S. Army General John Shalikashvili, who was born in pre-WWII Poland and emmigrated to the
US, rose through the ranks to become General Colin Powell's successor as Chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff, the first foreign-born US citizen to hold the job. His official Pentagon biography
says he learned English by watching John Wayne movies. He died of complications
from a stroke suffered in 2004. He was 75.

Actor Peter Falk, who starred in one of the longest running shows on television,
"Columbo," has died in his Beverly Hills home. His lawyer said Falk had suffered
in recent years from Alzheimer's Disease. He was awarded four Emmy's for his
characterization of a police detective, Lt. Columbo, who had a hallmark habit of
always saying: "One more thing..." Falk was 83.

Alan Haberman, bar code champion, dies

Alan Haberman is credited with promoting the ubiquitous bar code, which is now
attached to just about everything that is bought, sold or inventoried. Although the
bar code was invented by two other men, Haberman, a supermarket executive, is
credited with being the first person to recognize its potential and campaigned
heavily for having it instituted in the retailing business. Haberman died in
Newton, Massachusetts of heart and lung disease. He was 81.

Dr. Jack Kevorkian, convicted in assisted suicides, dies

Dr. Jack Kevorkian, who was prosecuted for conducting assisted suicides, has
died at the age of 83. He died early Friday morning at a hospital in Royal Oak,
Michigan, where he was being treated for kidney and heart problems. He was
convicted of 2nd degree murder in 1999 and served 8 years in prison for helping
terminally ill patients end their own lives. Doctors say his life was ended by a
pulmonary thrombosis.

'Gunsmoke' star James Arness dies at 88

Actor James Arness starred as Marshall Matt Dillon on the CBS hit show,
"Gunsmoke" from 1955 to 1975, TV's longest running dramatic series until
NBC's "Law & Order" tied it in 2010. Arness, who stood 6' 6" was the older
brother of another soft-spoken fixture on TV, actor Peter Graves. Arness
died of natural causes at his home in Brentwood, California.

Actor Jeff Conaway has died after being put into a medically-induced coma. He had
entered an Encino hospital after suffering pain killer overdose complications related
to a serious fall in his home last year. He was 60.

BRISBANE: Pregnant ex-WNBA player Margo Dydek dies

Margo Dydek, who, at 7-foot-2, was believed to have been the tallest woman to
have ever played in the WNBA. Pictured here in an L.A. Sparks uniform, Dydek,
who was born in Poland, led the league nine times in blocked shots. She died
of a heart attack while carrying her third child at home in Brisbane, where she
coached an Australian women's team. She was 37.
